Namazgah Bathhouse is located in Konak, Izmir. It was built approximately in 16th century. Who was the sponsor, why did he build it and who was the designer is unknown. But, there is a certain fact that the building always used as a bathhouse during those years.
Even there are several bathhouses in that area, this bathhouse is more valuable. Because it is from the doubled bathhouses group. So, it is both for men and women users. It has a great social value during the centuries.
But, the bathhouse was not available for users for several years. It was a really bad condition. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality decided to restore the building and its surrounding area. The cost of the project was around 1.000.000 Turkish Liras. The project is designed by the ARTI3 Mimarlık.
The restoration project includes many changes. One of the largest change is about the surrounding area. There were no proper walkway and a courtyard around the building. So, they demolished the additional brick walls, cleaned the road and redesigned the courtyard as an open cinema. Secondly, They repaired the entrance gate as its original. They demolished the brick extensions of the door and replaced with a stone arch. Thirdly, they repair all of the walls. They injected concrete in them to create a more durable structure and to keep the walls standing. Fourthly, they added some modern features to space such as a sauna, to get more attention and to create a link between the old and new. Lastly, They restored the domes that are also the main and only natural light source of the bathhouse.
