Tarihi Ahmet Ağa Konağı is located in Kemeraltı. It was built in the first half of the 19th century. The original owner of the building was a wealthy Jewish man and his family.
We can say that this building has an average size in comparison with its time. It has 2 parts as “Haremlik” and “Selamlık”. Selamlık part is the space where the guests are coming and sitting. It is like a common space. It has a very ornamented style. But the Haremlik part is just for the house’s own members. And has a more plain style.
The building was used as a living space in its first years. Then, it became the first national library of Izmir. It was a center of socializing and learning. Therefore, the building has a social value too. Today, it belongs to Salepçi Hacı Ahmet Efendi Vakfı and the Directorate General Of The Foundations. It is rented by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality for 5 years to place the Izmir Tarih Proje Merkezi in here in return to restore the building. Because the konak was almost about to collapse.
During the restoration, they have changed many things. Primarily, they strengthen the foundation for having a secure zone. Then, they discovered the basement floors, and repaired and supported these floors’ walls. Thirdly, they did the injection in the walls to keep them strong. Then, they changed all the decking by keeping the original style. Finally, they repaired the ceiling ornamentation and recreated some loose ones.
